Congratulations, When’s the Date?

January 5, 2010

Probably typical and naive, but although my Hubby-to-be (H2B) and I talked extensively about getting engaged, picking out the perfect ring, and knowing that one day we will get married… we never planned beyond the engagement.  In our minds, the proposal was the big event that all this talk was leading up to.  Everything beyond that is a detail, unimportant, and seemingly will sort itself out.  We had essentially pledged ourselves to each other and that should be that.

Imagine my surprise when the very next day, we tell his family of our good news, they scream and cry (in joy, I’m assuming), and ask the bizarre question – “When’s the date?”

Date?  Wedding date?  How on earth should we know that already??  I thought we did well picking the ring.

A few days later, after more extended family asked us the same question again, we sat down and tried our darnest to pick a date.  We decided to start with seasons and narrowed it down to Fall, Winter, or Spring.  When my friend asked me the dubious question I happily told her of our progress.  She thought it was hilarious.

I should add a disclaimer here.  DISCLAIMER: You might think me naive or clueless when it comes to weddings.  Well, that’s because I am.  I have never attended a wedding, my parents had a very simple nontraditional wedding with no ceremony in another country, and none of my close friends have ever been married.  In fact, of my 3 closest girl friends, I am the first to get this far.  Sure, I’ve seen movies where weddings took place, so I know that there is a ceremony with the exchange of “I do’s” and a party afterwards.  That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge in this area.

That is why I am starting this blog.  I am starting from as square one as you can get, and if I can do this anyone can.  This is a blog to document my progress, my trials and tribulations in planning a wedding, and hopefully this will be helpful to other newly engaged couples who don’t have a clue.  At the end of this adventure, I hope to have a beautiful ceremony and a memorable party that my friends and family will look back fondly on.

With that, I leave you with a picture of H2B and I on a boat in Luzern, Switzerland.
