DIY Beauty: Foundation Fail

February 27, 2010

I think I remember why I don’t wear foundation.  Sensitive, acne-prone skin failure.   I am really glad my foundation search started out 7 months early, because recovery time is nigh.   A couple weeks ago with MoH in tow, I got myself some samples of MAC and Make Up For Ever for a test drive.

Make Up For Ever is a Sephora brand (the high end version of their “Sephora” products).  This foundation is called HD Invisible Cover Foundation.  Online description states “An oil-free medium-to-full-coverage liquid foundation that covers skin imperfections flawlessly while remaining invisible on-screen and in real life.”  That sounds pretty good to me.  Nobody wants to look like they have cake on their face.  I was told by the sales lady this is THE foundation to wear for photos.  Plus, a friend of mine with similar skin woes always looked great in it.  I got myself a sample of color 118 Flesh.  This retails for $40 for 1 oz (holy cow).

The first testrun resulted in dry patches by the end of the day.  My forehead was almost flaking off.  I attributed this to poor exfoliation on my part and put this away for another day.  A week later, I tried it again with much better results.  Looked good from arms length but I didn’t like the makeupy look.  You can definitely tell I have something on (well with a magnifying mirror, haha).

Second foundation I tried was MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid with SPF 15.  It’s online description is “A modern foundation that combines a natural matte finish and medium-buildable coverage with broad spectrum UVA/UVB SPF 15. Comfortable and long-wearing: lasts for up to eight hours. Applies smoothly, etc.”  Matte finish is good for me because I made the mistake of trying Bobbi Brown’s “illuminating” foundation one time that made me look like the inside of a wok.  Add flash photography and you pretty much see a reflection of the camera.  Anyway, so matte is the way to go for weddings.  My color is nc30.  This retails for $26 for 1 oz (much better than the above).

I actually wore this on 4-5 occasions since I got the sample.  It applied smoothly and easily.  I used my fingers to blend (probably a faux pas, but what the heck).  It appeared seamless, didn’t look caky on my skin and actually looked all around GREAT.  I didn’t know I was capable of looking so nice.  Everything was going well until my forehead started itching.

For someone who is not allergic to anything but cat dander in this world, I sure am reacting to something in the Mac foundation.  My forehead has broken out in hive-like bumps.  Not acne (thank god!), but itchy and red and bumpy.  =(  Perhaps their secret ingredient is cat fur?

Well the search goes on… if I can muster up enough courage to try again.  Any recommendations?
